Museo del Cabildo Description:
Location: Museo del Cabildo, Bolívar 65, 1066 CABA. [website] Notes: Gaskell (1970, page 21, RA1) notes: “A few parts of an old common press – box hose and platen (both with hooks), press stone and tympan frame – have been built into a completely reconstructed machine. The restoration is badly carried out; the screw, of immense length, works in both head and cap, the tympan frame is filled with wood, the platen is hung endways on, etc.; but the original parts are of some interest. They are believed to have belonged to a press imported from Italy in 1764 for the Jesuit printing office at Córdoba, central Argentina; it was moved to Buenos Aires in 1780, where it worked until 1824.” El Torritorio (March 31, 2011) mentions (translated from Spanish): “in two weeks we will have the results of the analysis of the timber being made in National Institute of Technology Industrial (INTI) and determine whether it is a native of Misiones or other wood in the world.” El Torritorio (March 31, 2011) mentions (translated from Spanish): “In 1893 Alberto Jordán donated the press to the Historical Museum of Buenos Aires. ... This museum piece passed through the workshops of Diario La Nación, where it was rebuilt. This restoration was poorly done because it did not respect the style of the original piece.” The sign states: “It is probably the first press that worked in the Río de la Plata. A local creation built and managed by the Jesuit and Guarani indigenous fathers in the Nuestra Señora de Loreto reduction, current province of Misiones. Made in the year 1700 from wood, iron and stone with types of tin and lead ”. This was modified to: “a historical reconstruction press made in 1942, with original parts from a late 18th century printing press.” (El Torritorio, June 12, 2016) See also: “La primera imprenta de sudamerica” (Region Litoral) and “Primera imprenta en el Río de la Plata (1695)” (El arcón de la historia Argentina, December 15, 2015).
