Glencairn Museum: 1001 Cathedral Road, Bryn Athyn, PA 19009.
The text on the head states: “Medieval style wooden printing press handcrafted for the Fenix Press of Allen Bjorkman by Richard Hicks of Cedar Crest, New Mexico.” “1990” is carved on the underside of the crown, and beside that is (probably woodburned) “Richard Hicks”.
Website: “In September 2010, Glencairn Museum acquired a ‘Gutenberg-era replica printing press’. Allen Bjorkman commissioned the construction of the replica. Richard Hicks of Cedar Crest, New Mexico made it. He made approximately 30 replica presses.” + “Bjorkman traveled with the press for many years, giving demonstrations at schools, museums, and Renaissance faires. Hicks modeled the Fenix Press on 16th-century traveling presses, which were smaller than a full-size Gutenberg press and capable of being quickly dismantled. Traveling presses, which were transported from town to town in wagons, played a key role in producing religious literature during the Protestant Reformation.”
