Comments:

At least five different engravings of this illustration were used in the 21 editions that were printed between 1695 and 1800. The appendices contain a preliminary bibliography and an overview of 21 illustrations.

There is only one 1694 edition in the Dutch Short title catalogue, but at least 3 editions were printed in 1694. This is the second edition. The engraving is the same as in the first edition - with the text engraved in the copperplate - but the printer differs.’

The text on the frontispice states: ‘Een goed eynde kroont het werk. Hier leert Voorzigtigheyd het menschelyk bedryf Te passen op ’t Gemoed, en meer voor Ziel en lyf Te zorgen met zyn hert; en hoemen d’aardse dingen Moet doen na maat en Wet, als regte Hemelingen.’ Below that, the text state: ‘Tot Amsteldam. Gedaan door Iohannes en Casparus Luyken, en Uytgegeven door Nicolaus Visscher met Privilegie.’
