Jan and Caspar Luyken: ‘Het Menselyk Bedryf. Vertoond in 100 Verbeeldingen: van Ambachten, Konsten, Henteeringen en Bedryven; met Versen.’
This book appeared first in 1694. A preliminary bibliography of this illustration lists 21 editions (April 2021). A first impression - pun intended - is that there are 5 different copper plates in the period 1694 - 1800:
1. The original by Luyken. Used in 1694 (3x), 1704, 1718, 1730, 1749, and 1767.
2. A version for 1695 (2x), 1699, 1725, 1750, and 1751 (= Nr 63 in top right corner)
3. A version by Christoph Weigel. Used in 1698, and 1711 (2x) (= Fraktur type).
4. A version for 1717, 1736, and 1758 (= reversed version)
5. A version for the 1790 edition (= recut).
Below are 21 illustrations of the copperplate printer published between 1694 and 1800. It is clear that several editions use the same gravures, but more detailed comparisons are necessary to investigate this.
